Tomorrow People is a project that will:
Build Climate Awareness with SRCDC whilst:
Empowering Families and Young People
At SRCDC, we believe in the power of community action to address the climate crisis. Our upcoming programme is designed to engage young people and families in learning about climate change and taking steps to tackle it. Through a series of inspiring visits to partner organisations, participants will gain a deeper understanding of environmental issues at local, Wales-wide, and global levels.
Who will be involved? We are working with:
- 36 young people aged 11-18 who attend SRCDC youth clubs.
- 10 mums and their children aged 5-12 in family groups.
Programme Highlights To explore solutions to the climate crisis from different angles, we’ve planned visits to:
- Green Squirrel: Families will take part in “Gardening for Climate Change,” learning food-growing techniques suited to a warmer, dryer climate. They’ll also collaborate with Cardiff Friends of the Earth to conduct heat loss surveys of their homes.
- Rheidol Hydropower Plant: Participants will learn how Ynni Cymru, Wales’ publicly owned renewable energy company, is helping the nation achieve 100% renewable energy by 2035. A visit to a wind and solar farm will demonstrate how renewable energy reduces carbon emissions.
- The Centre for Alternative Technology: Families will be inspired by real-world climate-saving systems in action.
- Bristol Aquarium and Newport Wetlands: These visits will help young people understand the effects of climate change on nature.
Creating a Climate Change Computer Game To harness the knowledge gained during the programme, SRCDC will empower young participants to design and develop a bilingual (English-Welsh) computer game about climate change. Here’s how it will come together:
- Consultations: Young people will choose which climate issues to incorporate based on the visits.
- Workshops: Age-inclusive sessions will ensure children and young people can contribute in ways that suit their skills. For example:
- Children aged 6+ can participate in drawing workshops to create characters and scenarios.
- Older participants can develop storyboards and non-linear content ideas.
- Those with technical skills can collaborate with a game designer on advanced elements.
- Soundtrack: Family groups will work with River Music to create a bespoke soundtrack.
- Gameplay: Players will complete tasks to reduce their carbon footprint, ultimately achieving net zero to graduate to the next level. The format will be simple and engaging to appeal to children aged 7-11.
Testing and Sharing The game will be tested by up to 60 school pupils in years 5-8 and by young people attending SRCDC clubs. Feedback will be collected to refine the game. Once completed, the game will be stored on open-source cloud platforms, making it available to schools and youth services.
SRCDC is excited to work alongside young people and families in this innovative programme, creating a ripple effect of awareness and action to address the climate crisis. Together, we can make a difference—one step at a time.
